ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami - Day 1
As darkness descended, the Laser Radial fleet could only manage two of their scheduled three races, but Bewdley Olympian Alison Young certainly made them count, bagging two wins to set her in pole position at the end of day one.
Young, who won the Melbourne World Cup regatta in December during an intense month-long competition spree, admitted modestly: "I seemed to make a few less mistakes than anyone else so it was a good day on the water."
"It wasn't really typical Miami conditions today – pretty breezy, still shifty out there so you had to keep your head out of the boat. It was certainly a breezy start to the week.
Young continued: "It's been a busy winter for me so far. I had a month of racing around the world – 3 continents and four competitions in four weeks just before Christmas. It's good to be here as well and racing again.
"It's a good fleet for Miami. Pretty much everyone's here as you'd expect for the first big regatta of the year so it should be good learning and a good challenge."
Nick Thompson is poised fourth after two races in the Laser class, with him and Alex Mills Barton ensuring a British 1-2 in the second of those races,

GBR Podium Places for Laser Radial Youth Sailors in Palamos
A number of British youth sailors travelled to Palamos in sunny Spain for the 2014 39th Gaes Christmas Race Olympic and ISAF Youth Classes. World Cup Gold for Young Down Under
Alison Young made the most of her trip to the ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne (9-14 December), claiming gold and early confirmation of her place at the 2015 World Cup Final in Abu Dhabi next October
Bewdley's Alison Young took a comfortable victory 16-point in the 30-boat Laser Radial fleet at her third regatta in as many weeks with a fourth place in Sunday's medal race more than enough to secure gold over Belarus sailor Tatiana Drozdovskaya.
"It was quite a tricky medal race we had there," Young suggested.
"It was pretty light beforehand and then the breeze pumped in and there were pretty big gains on the right hand side. It was quite tense on the first beat."
"It's been some good, fun racing. There are a few 'learners' on some of the starting and some of the downwinds, so I'll look to progress some of those," added Young, who now will join some of her British Sailing Team colleagues in Rio for one final regatta – the Copa Brasil de Vela (16-20 December) – to round off 2014.

Laser 4.7 Ladder 5 and Radial Youth Open Cancelled
Based on current weather forecasts and following discussions this afternoon (Thursday) between Grafham Water Sailing Club, the Race Officer and representatives of UKLA, we do not think we will be able to hold reasonable racing for the Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 classes this weekend 8/9 February 2014 at Grafham Water Sailing Club.
Therefore we have decided to cancel :
1. The Laser Radial Youth Open event.
2. The Laser 4.7 Ladder 5, Worlds & European Qualifier 2 and IOC Youth Olympic Games Qualifier 2 event.
A separate announcement will be made by UKLA relating to qualification for Worlds & European events and a separate announcement will be made by the RYA relating to qualification for the Youth Olympic Games.
Peter Saxton - Commodore - Grafham Water Sailing Club
Simon Dabson - Race Officer
The RYA supports the decision made by the UKLA and Grafham Water Sailing Club to cancel the Laser 4.7 ladder event due to be held on 8/9 February 2014. This is due to extreme weather across the country and being highly unlikely to be able to race safely as well as the risk involved in travelling.
The RYA is aware that this event formed the second and final event in a series to select sailors for the IOC Youth Olympic Games.
It is the selector’s intention that the results from the first event (Datchet on 18/19 January 2014) will be used to select sailors to phase 2 as per the selection policy. There is no intention to extend the series further.
Confirmation of the sailors selected will be announced on Monday 10th February 2014.

We continue to monitor weather forecasts for this weekend at Grafham Water SC and will publish a decision on whether the Laser 4.7 Qualifier and Radial Youth Open events go ahead as planned at or soon after 7pm today, Thursday 6 February.
