Laser Qualifier 6 - Abandonned
Unfortunately, after discussing the matter with the club at Plymouth and watching the various forecasts, we have no real alternative but to abandon the qualifier at Plymouth this weekend.
The biggest problem, unsurprisingly, is the real threat of the storm force winds which are forecast for Sunday evening. Winds at Plymouth are currently 25 knots gusting 40 with no real prospect of them easing appreciably but with a significant risk of them increasing.
There is another real problem which is the location of the Course. Given the likely strong wind and large waves, all from the south-west, a direction from which the Sound is exposed, the club would not be prepared to set the course outside the breakwater, nor in Cawsand Bay. That leaves only inside the breakwater and there lies our real problem. The storm forecast has led to large ships making for shelter in the Sound. The Harbour-master is expecting a good deal of shipping activity on both days, any movement of which might force us to abandon a race whilst in progress. We understand that there is already a large ship at Anchorage 2 which is slap in the middle of our intended course area. (I suppose I could ask her to move!!)
Sorry. We understand how much this event meant to many of you.

Noble Marine World & European Autumn Qualifying Series – Round 2
Even with several of the top helms away at international events nearly 130 Standard & Radial Lasers made the trip to Kent for the second of the autumn series of Qualifiers sponsored by Noble Marine, incorporating the Crewsaver Youth Series. The weather was not particularly hospitable, tricky in the words of the Race Officer Ken Falcon, but even so both fleets managed to sail two races each day. The Radial fleet had 93 entries and so the fleet was divided into four sections and sailed in a Round Robin format for both days ... CLick on title to read whole article

UKLA Laser Masters' Nationals
It is a number of years since the UK Laser Assn visited the lovely Dorset resort of Lyme Regis. 116 competitors arrived to find the town basking in the tropical temperatures and the waters in the bay a millpond. It was very appropriate as the main sponsor of the Championships was Wildwind Sailing Holidays, who are based in Greece. With the harbour beach overflowing with boats the rest of the Lasers were lined up along the famous Cobb wall. There was an international feel to the entry list with competitors from Ireland and the Netherlands joining helms from across the country ...

I and I'm sure everyone who attended the Masters Nationals this weekend would like to thank David Beer and everyone at Lyme Regis SC for putting on a superb event.
We couldn't have asked for better race and shore-side management, which coupled with a great location and easy launching made for a most enjoyable and memorable event.
All the "controllables" were handled brilliantly. The wind strength was another matter, but it was the same challenge for everyone.
I was especially impressed by:
The trolley management - isn't it great when you're trolley is brought to you as you come ashore or someone can tell you exactly were it is?
The Galley - the ladies turned our some great food.
Tally Board - with my memory it was reassuring to have the constant reminders as we exited and entered the changing rooms to tally on or off
Efficient results - every day by the time we were unrigged and changed the full results were posted.
Website - The results were up on the club website by the time I arrived home.
Thank you. A shining example of how events should be run!
