Sailing marathon for UKLA Chairman
Ken Falcon is in the process of preparing to sail around the Isle of Wight on 1st June whilst the Round Island Yacht race is taking place. He will be sailing his Solo, the singled-handed racing dinghy in aid of 'Sailability', the RYA's unit for assisting disabled sailors, which is a wonderful cause.

The entire circumnaviagtion of the Island, a distance of about 60 miles, will take me about 16 hrs. Ken will be launching from Stokes Bay Sailing club at about 03.00hrs and sail to Cowes (in the dark) so that he will start before the first RTI start at 05.00hrs. As you know, there will be some 1600 boats taking part, so he should be in great company. If, due to adverse conditions, he can't go on 1st, then he will reschedule for 2nd, 15th, or 16th.

Ken will be paying his own expenses, ie travelling costs etc in order to maximise income to Sailability. Ron Westwood will be accompanying him in a rib - just in case.

If you would like to donate, no matter how small, or large, every penny counts, then use the following link www.justgiving.com/Ken-Falcon or, if you prefer, send a cheque to Ken Falcon at Spring Cottage, Venns Gate, Cheddar, BS27 3LW made payable to 'RYA Sailability'.

For more information on the Charity and the work the RYA do, you can look at www.rya.sailability.co.uk. If you get a chance, please circulate this information to anyone you think might be interested and/or who you think might be glad to give a donation.

Andrew (Bart) Simpson
It was with great sadness that I learnt of Andrew's death whilst he was racing on Artemis in San Francisco Bay. It is hard to accept that our sport can, on occasion, be fatally dangerous. Bart, as we have called him for years, was, along with Iain and Ben, part of the larger Laser family having competed in many of our major events. Bart was a great sailor and a great guy. He was definitely one of my heroes. We shall all miss him. Ken Falcon - UKLA Chairman

The Laser Class are very shocked and sad to hear of the death of Andrew (Bart) Simpson in San Francisco yesterday and would like to pas on our sympathies to his parents, wife and children. Andrew joined the Laser class from Optimist as a teenager sailing in the RYA Youth Squad with Ian Percy and Ben Ainslie, going onto Olympic level sailing. In 2001 he moved onto the Finn class, and then teamed up with his old Laser friend Ian Percy to campaign a Star in the Olympics with such great success. He will be missed in sailing as one of its great characters. Dot Beadsworth - UKLA Secretary

Laser / Torch Update
UKLA represents the owners of Lasers and, as regards the current legal action being taken by Bruce Kirby, has no standing, legal or otherwise, in respect of any legal arrangements between designer and/or copyright owner and/or licencee and/or builder etc. All UKLA can do is watch, somewhat bemused, and wait to see what comes out of it all. I am aware, from hearsay, that Lasers are still being sold. As regards those Lasers, if they display a plaque issued by ISAF, then UKLA can only judge them as being a Laser ... Co-ordinator wanted!
Over the last couple of years I have been lucky enough to co-ordinate the Home Counties & Eastern Region Laser Grand Prix. Unfortunately it has come time for me to hand it over to the next person for an exciting new chapter in the sailing series. Its a simple enough to organize with many exciting opportunities to meet new sailors across the region and country. I will be happy to help my successor take it over and possibly carry on doing posters and the website in the future if they want. It doesn't have to done by just one person, I have been doing it with my Dad and its worked out ok for us.
If you are interested in taking on this exciting role then don't hesitate to get in contact with me!

Sunderland Qualifier - Radial report
The first Autumn Qualifier always sees a plethora of new faces and the absence of some old, as sailors move classes, either joining from the junior classes or leaving for higher performance boats or simply boats for heavier people! HARKEN UK LASER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
With the Olympics just days away this year's National Championships are missing some key figures. So far the weather at Abersoch has been rather unpredictable and there have been delays afloat to allow banks of mist and drizzle to clear the race areas. However, for the 200 helms that have entered the regatta the event is living up to expectations.

After the first three full days of racing and with six races completed, and a discard now allowed, Alex Mills-Barton has won five races in the Standard fleet to hold an 8 point lead going into the 2nd half of the championship. Behind him a group of four helms: Martin Evans, Jack Wetherell, Elliot Hanson & Ben Cornish are locked into a battle for the other main places overall.

The near 100 strong Radial fleet have been racing in flights but after today's results they will be separated into Gold & Silver fleets for the final two day's racing. Hannah Snellgrove holds a narrow popints lead over youth sailor Jack Preece, both of them recording only wins and 2nds on their scorecards. Behind them six helms have a realistic chance of upsetting the overall results.

The Laser 4.7 fleet is showing healthy signs of growth with 49 boats entered, including a strong representation from across the sea (Ireland) and six different winners. Three helms; Hamish Eckstein, Conor O'Beirne & Will Creaven are showing at the top but with the weather set to improve for the rest of the week all things are possible.

The championships are sponsored by HARKEN UK and continue until Friday, 20th July

UKLA Notice of Annual General Meeting

FIRST WILDWIND HOLIDAY WON
The first of two sailing holidays donated by Wildwind Holidays to the UK Laser Assn was won at the UKLA Masters' Nationals by Gary Pilgrim from
Brightlingsea S.C.

Gary's winning ticket was drawn during the Championship Dinner at Paignton S.C. on Saturday evening. Gary's holiday, which includes flights, accommodation, transfers and all the sailing Gary can pack in, will be at Wildwind's sailing destination in windy Vassiliki on the beautiful Greek island of Lefkas. Gary can choose any date for his holiday to be taken either later this year or next year - perhaps he'd like to join British Head Coach Chris Gowers (who took Paul Goodison to Gold in 2008) at his specialised Laser Training week in May 2013.

The other holiday will be won by a qualifying helm from the ten regional Grand prix series currently running across the UK and will be drawn at the UKLA Inland championships at the end of the season

Team GBR ISAF Youth Laser Representatives
As the RYA Volvo Youth National Championships 2012 came to a close on Friday (6 April) after four days of adrenaline-charged racing in Cardigan Bay, Sarah Webb Gosling OBE who represented Britain twice at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships and won two consecutive Olympic gold medals, revealed the names of the twelve sailors who will represent RYA Volvo Team GBR – the team set to compete for Great Britain in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships.

The ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship 2012, to be held from 12-21 July in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, is the 42nd edition of the championship. The venue for the championship will be the Royal St George, National and Royal Irish yacht clubs on Dublin Bay.

In the single handed category, Welsh sailors Michael Beckett and Ellie Meopham made the most of their local knowledge making up GBR’s contenders in the Laser Radial class.

Ellie Meopham, the Welsh sailor from Fishguard Bay SC, commented: “It’s quite over whelming to have won but I’m really happy and it’s such a great way to end the week. Today’s first race didn’t go well but in the last two races I had great starts. Generally the weeks racing has gone well; there’s been a mixture of conditions which have suited all the sailors and Pwllheli is a great sailing venue. The Youth Worlds is going to be the biggest regatta I have ever sailed in so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Rule Interpretations: Splicing on the Traveller
The December 2010 issue of Laser World announced a number of Rule Interpretations. One of these has clarified Rule 3(b)(ii) on splicing the loop in the traveller: "The most forward part of the triangle that forms the traveller is regarded as load-bearing and may have a splice at that point." As it was a Rule interpretation, not a change in the Rule itself, it became effective as soon as it was issued. It has also been included, with the other interpretations, on page 43 of the 2011 ILCA handbook, which you should have received at the beginning of June.

At the briefing for the Stokes Bay Qualifier in March, the UK Measurer Nick Livingstone mistakenly told competitors that using a splice to close the traveler loop was illegal. Several sailors therefore took out their traveller splice, or were asked to remove it. Nick had not been made aware of the formal interpretation at the time of the Stokes Bay Qualifier, and apologizes to all those competitors who were adversely affected.

Nick also asks everyone to note that (a) the splice must end before the traveller Clamcleat: you cannot have a thin traveller-loop and a thicker tail passing through the traveller cleat, and (b) the traveller cannot be spliced or re-formed anywhere else along its length. For instance, reinforcement of the rope where it passes through the traveller fairleads is not allowed. The use of metal fairleads can cause excessive wear of the traveller rope; any minor burr or imperfection can cut into the rope, and some ropes are more prone to friction and UV degradation. Using the original type of plastic fairleads will solve the first problem, though you will need to monitor these for long-term wear.

If anyone has any questions about these interpretations or any other Rule matters, please email Nick at technical@laser.org.uk
