Bill Stean, Weir Wood SC
We are very sad to announce the untimely death of Bill Stean from Weir Wood SC, after a 6 month battle with cancer. Many of you will know Bill as a regular on the Masters circuit. He was a great competitor and a top bloke, with a wicked sense of humour. He'll be missed by all, but particularly by his sailing peers at Weir Wood where he was a popular Laser class captain. Rest in peace Bill.

RYA Youth Nationals - Day 3

Whilst six boats were black-flagged in the first race of the day, Jack Cookson took advantage posting another race win followed by two thirds to see him jump to the top of the Laser leaderboard.

Cookson said: "It was a pretty good day, won the first race, then a solid 3,3 in the next two. Unfortunately I couldn't catch Sam on the last two!"

"It was really fun out there, a little more wind than forecast, not too shifty, big waves, so all in all a really good day," explained Cookson.

Dan Whiteley slips to second while Sam Whaley made amends for his black-flagged first race, winning the last two races to end the day third.

Whaley described his day: "Unfortunately I got a black flag in the first race which wasn't ideal so had to sit the race out, but then I got two bullets which I'm really happy about.

"We had lovely sailing conditions, 10-15 knots and waves downwind which you could really play in and managed to bring it home," he added.

Over in the girls' fleet, Stokes Bay's Chloe Barr clung on to her lead taking a bullet in the second race of the day. Daisy Collingridge sits second for her efforts. Revelling in the wind and waves was Clementine Thompson posting three seconds to see her advance to third on the scoresheet.

Collingridge, sitting one point adrift from the top spot, commented: "It was really nice to sail in breeze and have something different to sail in. Downwind was really fun, trying to get down the waves and keep the boat moving.

"It's been an interesting week with no one really dominating the fleet, it's been changing all the time so it's kept it really interesting," the 17-year-old concluded ... [click on title for full article]

On August 12, 2016 the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut issued its long awaited order and dismissed complaints and allegations by Bruce Kirby and Bruce Kirby Inc. against LaserPerformance and the International Laser Class Association.
The complaint filed by these plaintiffs alleged that the defendants were involved in a scheme not to pay royalties to Bruce Kirby and Bruce Kirby Inc., and illegally allowed the manufacturing of Laser sailboats by LaserPerformance.
The Court order confirmed that Mr. Kirby and Bruce Kirby, Inc. had no basis to sue LaserPerformance and denied and dismissed all such claims in entirety.
The Court order also emphasizes that Bruce Kirby has sold his interests to Global Sailing Limited of Australia. Global Sailing Limited is a group company and affiliate of Performance Sailcraft Australia, the Builder of Laser boats in Australia.
The decision can be found at here.
In its defense counterclaims against the plaintiffs, LaserPerformance sought to recover overpayments of royalties made by LaserPerformance to Bruce Kirby and Bruce Kirby Inc. over the years. This overpayment came to light in an accounting audit in preparation for the litigation initiated by Bruce Kirby.
The Court order of August 2016 allowed LaserPerformance to pursue such claims for overpayments against Bruce Kirby, Kirby Inc. and Global Sailing.
LaserPerformance will pursue its claims for overpayment of royalties with equal determination and will also focus its attention and resources to related infringements of its intellectual property rights by these parties and their affiliates. LaserPerformance has requested a trial date for its remaining claims by way of a motion filed on 12 December 2016.
For over three years LaserPerformance vigorously fought these false allegations at great expense to the company, its reputation and the sailing community it serves.
There is no victory in any litigation but LaserPerformance is pleased that it stands vindicated in pursuing the spurious and fraudulen

The International Laser Class Association (ILCA) is pleased to announce the release of a class-legal composite top mast section that is expected to be available for purchase in early 2017.

Because the new mast was designed with the exact same weight and bend characteristics as the existing aluminum upper sections, it will not provide a performance advantage but instead will eliminate the permanent bending problems associated with the aluminum spars.

"ILCA's policy regarding the introduction of new equipment is that it should always have the same characteristics as the existing equipment and that the new equipment should not give a performance advantage when raced alongside existing equipment," says ILCA Executive Secretary, Eric Faust. "The composite mast definitely meets that objective. It's been tested by some of the top Laser sailors in the world and they all agree that they can't determine any difference while sailing."

According to ILCA Technical Officer, Clive Humphris, "The new top section has been rigorously developed and tested over the past six years to assure that it is a 'like-for-like' part with the current mast. The advantage is that the new mast will be much more durable and won't be prone to permanent bending like the aluminum masts."

Because the composite mast is now a fully approved change to the Laser Construction Manual, there is no need for a change to the Laser Class Rules. As long as the mast is purchased from an approved Laser Builder or one of its authorized dealers, it will be legal for use at all ILCA sanctioned events.

The new mast specifications have been developed in close cooperation between the approved Laser Builders, World Sailing and ILCA. Because the composite top section is class legal and it will not provide any advantage in performance on the water, neither ILCA nor World Sailing anticipate that the use of the composite mast will need to be restricted for any future events. If it is subsequently determined that the use of the mast needs to be re

Laser 4.7 Summer Squad Indication changes
As requested by the RYA and the majority of the 4.7 fleet, we have moved the second Summer Squad indicator Ladder 9 to the 1st and 2 nd April 2017 in Datchet Water SC. This will help the sailors with their school exams in May 2017. We have cancelled Ladder 9 on the 13/14 May in Pwhelli as very few sailors indicated that they are able to attend due to school exam pressure.

Team GBR Masters tear it up in Croatia!
UK Masters have just completed an outstanding triple at the Radial Masters Europeans at Hvar, Croatia, occupying 5 of the top six places overall in the 88 boat fleet! OBITUARY - Nigel Blake - Laser master
It is with great sadness I have to tell you Nigel Blake died 30th September 2015.
When I started the Laser Masters in Britain Nigel was one of the very first to participate and carried on successfully competing until recently.
He was well known in the Eastern Region and clubs such as Stewartby, Grafham and on the Norfolk coast where he last sailed at Rollesby Broad Sailing Club.
For many decades he attended the Dutch and other European Championships. Nigel, his bicycle and the van he slept in were a familiar sight. He will be much missed.
Nigel’s Sister was my informant and she knew nothing of his sailing life. She contacted me in January after opening my Christmas card to him. She would love to hear from Nigel’s sailing friends near and far. She is Mrs Pamela Murphy ( If you would like her address please ask me - Hilary Thomas (
