Team GBR ISAF Youth Laser Representatives
As the RYA Volvo Youth National Championships 2012 came to a close on Friday (6 April) after four days of adrenaline-charged racing in Cardigan Bay, Sarah Webb Gosling OBE who represented Britain twice at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships and won two consecutive Olympic gold medals, revealed the names of the twelve sailors who will represent RYA Volvo Team GBR – the team set to compete for Great Britain in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships.
The ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship 2012, to be held from 12-21 July in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, is the 42nd edition of the championship. The venue for the championship will be the Royal St George, National and Royal Irish yacht clubs on Dublin Bay.
In the single handed category, Welsh sailors Michael Beckett and Ellie Meopham made the most of their local knowledge making up GBR’s contenders in the Laser Radial class.
Ellie Meopham, the Welsh sailor from Fishguard Bay SC, commented: “It’s quite over whelming to have won but I’m really happy and it’s such a great way to end the week. Today’s first race didn’t go well but in the last two races I had great starts. Generally the weeks racing has gone well; there’s been a mixture of conditions which have suited all the sailors and Pwllheli is a great sailing venue. The Youth Worlds is going to be the biggest regatta I have ever sailed in so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Rule Interpretations: Splicing on the Traveller
The December 2010 issue of Laser World announced a number of Rule Interpretations. One of these has clarified Rule 3(b)(ii) on splicing the loop in the traveller: "The most forward part of the triangle that forms the traveller is regarded as load-bearing and may have a splice at that point." As it was a Rule interpretation, not a change in the Rule itself, it became effective as soon as it was issued. It has also been included, with the other interpretations, on page 43 of the 2011 ILCA handbook, which you should have received at the beginning of June.
At the briefing for the Stokes Bay Qualifier in March, the UK Measurer Nick Livingstone mistakenly told competitors that using a splice to close the traveler loop was illegal. Several sailors therefore took out their traveller splice, or were asked to remove it. Nick had not been made aware of the formal interpretation at the time of the Stokes Bay Qualifier, and apologizes to all those competitors who were adversely affected.
Nick also asks everyone to note that (a) the splice must end before the traveller Clamcleat: you cannot have a thin traveller-loop and a thicker tail passing through the traveller cleat, and (b) the traveller cannot be spliced or re-formed anywhere else along its length. For instance, reinforcement of the rope where it passes through the traveller fairleads is not allowed. The use of metal fairleads can cause excessive wear of the traveller rope; any minor burr or imperfection can cut into the rope, and some ropes are more prone to friction and UV degradation. Using the original type of plastic fairleads will solve the first problem, though you will need to monitor these for long-term wear.
If anyone has any questions about these interpretations or any other Rule matters, please email Nick at technical@laser.org.uk
