BUYERS BEWARE - FAKE SAILS HAVE BEEN FOUND
A South Coast Laser sailor swapped some kit recently. One of the items he acquired was a Radial sail, which has turned out to be a fake. Not an identifiable replica, but a clear fake, with a Laser square patch at the tack. It doesn't have a Laser button, and there are some other differences.
Our Measurer Nick Livingstone has created a page on his deadrock.co.uk website with pictures of the offending article. Use the title link to get there.
If you are buying second hand sails be extremely careful. As the Coppers say ignorance is not an excuse. (02/07/09)

UKLA NATIONALS @ PAIGNTON - RIBS
Paignton SC welcomes visiting RIBs and their crews who are willing to carry out support and rescue duties each day on the racing course. These RIBs and their crews will be accredited so that they can enjoy FREE FUEL TOP-UPS, FREE MOORINGS & FREE VOUCHERS for PACKED LUNCHES. They will also be able to leave their trailers on the Green. RIBs coming to Paignton to act as spectator craft or to provide support for individual sailors will have to make their own arrangements. Spare moorings in Paignton harbour are limited so most visiting RIBs will be allocated to either Torquay or Brixham harbours. There will be a ferry service to take accredited RIB drivers to and from these harbours before and after racing each day. For this reason all RIB owners planning to bring a RIB to Paignton are requested to contact Roger Gater by email, address rogergater@yahoo.co.uk giving their name, type of RIB, date and time of arrival and intended use of the RIB during the week. Accreditation will be issued where appropriate. - Dot

ILCA - EC379 - SURVEY REGARDING 'BOAT LENGTHS AROUND ZONE AT THE MARK' - EXTRACT of OUTCOME
In EC364 we explained that the definition of the 'zone at the mark' has changed in the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) for 2009-2012. The distance is now 3 hull lengths, it was previously 2 hull lengths. However, the 'zone' around the mark can be changed in the sailing instructions to either 2 or 4 boat lengths from the mark.
A test of both 3 boat lengths and 4 boats lengths was made at the Europa cup in Lugano in March. As well as the on-water testing the topic was also discussed at the coaches meeting and with sailors and the organisers provided a poster to allow feedback. The majority of people were in favour of 3 boat lengths based on the ease of judging on water the distance from the mark.
Following the feedback we have received and the live test , 3 hull lengths will be the standard 'zone around the mark' at all major European Laser events in 2009.
On behalf of the European executive committee,
Jean-Luc MICHON

CHAMPIONSHIPS, QUALIFIERS & OPEN MEETINGS
Unfavourable comments have been made about the state of the Dinghy Park & Car Park at Highcliffe following our Qualifier there last weekend.
It is extremely important that as members of UKLA we behave properly when we visit clubs. The clubs we go to put a lot of effort into making us welcome. It is common courtesy that we respect their club and its grounds.
On practical terms the number of clubs that can accommodate our large numbers of boats is small and we need them to be willing to have us back again.
If you have rubbish either take it away with you, put it in the club's rubbish bins or as a last resort get a black sack from Dot, she will have a supply with her in future.
I do not want to hear these type of remarks again - Thank you - Ken Falcon, PRO & Chairman - 31/03/09

IMPORTANT - HOW TO ENTER A QUALIFIER EVENT
Some confusion seems to have arisen about how to enter a UKLA Qualifier event for the Standard or Radial rigs.
1. You have to be a member of the UKLA, but you can join as a temporary member for that weekend.
2. You can turn up at the club with your boat and enter on the day.
3. You can, if you are organised and want to, enter on-line. This method of entry closes a few days before the event to enable the paperwork to be completed
I hope this eradicates any ambiguity - Eddie (18/03/09)
